Wu Guoguang: Why did Xi Jinping purge Zhang Youxia? Who's next?

    From 🇨🇳 不明白播客, published at 2026-01-25 17:52

On the afternoon of January 24, Beijing time, China's Ministry of National Defense announced that Zhang Youxia, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission, and Liu Zhenli, a member of the Central Military Commission and Chief of the Joint Staff Department, are suspected of serious violations of discipline and law and have been placed under investigation. This means that among the seven members of the Central Military Commission appointed by Xi Jinping at the 20th Party Congress, two vice chairmen and three other members have been purged in the past two years or so. Now, only Xi Jinping, as Chairman of the Central Military Commission, remains, leading one member, Zhang Shengmin. Why did Xi Jinping take action against Zhang Youxia, his childhood friend? Why is he continuously carrying out a major purge of the military? Does this purge mean that the danger of a Taiwan Strait war is imminent? Who might be the next CCP leader to be purged? This episode's guest is Professor Wu Guoguang, a senior research scholar at the Stanford University Center on China's Economy and Institutions. Last summer, Professor Wu joined the podcast to discuss how to view various rumors about Xi Jinping losing power and how to rationally analyze high-level CCP politics. In this episode, he will explain the logic behind Xi Jinping's purge of Zhang Youxia and what the ultimate outcome of Xi Jinping's major purge will be. Welcome to watch the video version of this podcast: https://youtu.be/xMKT-Eneutg We also recommend listening to this episode in conjunction with 'EP-162 Wu Guoguang: Has Xi Jinping Lost Power?' https://bumingbai.net/2025/08/02/ep-162-wgg/ Submission email: [email protected] Timeline: 01:43 What does Zhang Youxia's downfall signify? 08:42 Why was the official announcement of Zhang and Liu's downfall so swift? 17:02 The 'Stalinist logic' behind Xi Jinping's major purge 26:17 Why did Xi Jinping even purge his childhood friend? 31:03 How might the military react to Zhang Youxia's purge? 37:22 Does Zhang Youxia's downfall mean a Taiwan Strait war is imminent? 44:46 How to view the claim that 'the next generation of military leaders might be more hawkish'? 46:43 What do the rumors of a power struggle between Xi Jinping and Zhang Youxia indicate? 51:52 The deep reasons why the CCP top leadership dares not challenge Xi Jinping 56:49 How to interpret the PLA Daily's editorial concerning Zhang Youxia's downfall? 58:58 Who might be the next person to be purged? How to power the world 24/7 — without oil | Cindy Taff

From 🇺🇸 TED Talks Daily, published at 2026-01-24 16:00

Deep beneath the Earth sits 50,000 times more energy than all the world's fossil fuel reserves, but accessing it requires using the same controversial technology that oil companies spent trillions to develop: fracking. Cindy Taff left Shell to prove that drilling for geothermal heat instead of hydrocarbons can deliver what solar, wind and fossil fuels can't — clean, renewable power at all times, regardless of weather. Could this be the breakthrough that finally solves our energy challenges?Learn more about our flagship conference happening this April at attend.ted.com/podcast Hosted on Acast. The faster you let go of the past, the further you can go. #BookSummary Think Again | MM EP.2592

From 🇹🇭 Mission To The Moon, published at 2026-01-24 13:01

In a fast-changing world, knowledge may have an expiry date, but the skill to relearn (Re-learn) is the most valuable asset. Many times we get caught in the trap of past successes, inadvertently putting on the hat of a 'politician' who only seeks allies, or an 'investigator' who focuses on finding fault with others, until we forget to examine whether the beliefs we hold are still valid today. The courage to let go of our old self is therefore not a defeat, but rather opening up space for a better self to grow. In this MM EP.2592, we will explore why the most successful people are not those who know the most, but rather those who "dare to let go of old knowledge" the fastest. Stop clinging and start to Think Again from today. #ThinkAgain #BookSummary #missiontothemoon #missiontothemoonpodcast
