Maya Fernández, granddaughter of Salvador Allende and former Minister of Defense of Chile, reflected on her grandfather's legacy, 52 years after the coup that led to his death and the 17-year dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet.
"My grandfather was a fervent believer in democracy. Those values must never be lost, because what happened in Chile was terrible. For many, Allende was a danger for being a socialist, but he was always clear that he wanted to be a president elected by his people and he maintained that loyalty until the last minute," she said.
"My first memory of this day is with my family and then with those who accompanied Allende in the Government to dream of a fair and equitable Chile. It is always a day to think, but at the same time to renew the commitment to democracy," she added.
"Collective memory is important so that what happened does not happen again. Human rights cannot be violated again for thinking differently," she continued.
In the lead-up to the November 16 presidential elections, Fernández Allende highlighted the current president Gabriel Boric and expressed her support for the candidate of the Unidad por Chile pact, Jeannette Jara.
"Boric embodies this defense of democracy, he emphasizes this a lot. We are working to ensure that Jara is our president. It is important not to go backwards, we still have those wounds. We must know how to carry the word democracy," she concluded.
The attack on the Twin Towers, in the first person: "From the inside you could see how the ceiling began to fall"
Héctor Jojot, an Argentine-Paraguayan businessman, was on the 83rd floor of the North Tower at the time of the impact of the first plane against the Twin Towers in New York 24 years ago, and shared his experiences with Cara o Ceca.
"We were about to begin the financial operation at 09:00 and at around 08:46 the first plane, which was coming from the Central Park side, hit. At that moment, the building shook as if it were an earthquake, from the inside you could see how the ceiling began to fall. We were in shock. We were not prepared for such a case," Jojot recounted.
"I remember very much the commitment of the rescuers, the firefighters, the police. A firefighter shouted at us to get out because the building was falling, but he didn't move, he was fulfilling his commitment. He stayed under the rubble while I managed to escape," he said.
"What happened was traumatic, but the solidarity of the people in the midst of the tragedy was hopeful. The Red Cross and the other institutions that were there gave us a lot of support. Psychological therapy afterwards helped me," he concluded.
