Tension is rising in relations between China and Japan after Japan's new Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, suggested in parliament that Japan might use military force if China were to attack Taiwan. "Polka. A word in which life resides. I clung to it like a promise" – writes Grażyna Plebanek, the only granddaughter of her grandmother, Apolonia Machczyńska-Świątek. Apolonia Machczyńska-Świątek hid Jews during World War II who managed to escape the liquidation of the Kock ghetto. In January 1943, she was shot by the Germans. Thanks to the testimony of one of the rescued Jewish women, Rywka Goldfinger, she was honored with the title of Righteous Among the Nations. Much has been written and said about Apolonia, called Pola by her loved ones. Always in the context of her death — a martyr's, monumental death. But Grażyna Plebanek wrote a book about her life. Although, as she admits, it was difficult: "Because grandmother died many times. In Annopol, at the place of her execution. In a German's testimony. In reports. On stage." The key to writing a story about her grandmother in the light of her life, not in the shadow of her death, was to free her history from the tragic myth in which she did not decide her own fate, but was sacrificed. Grażyna Plebanek followed the trail of words and sentences that contained movement and life. That is why her book "Pola. The Hidden Life of Apolonia Machczyńska-Świątek" is best discussed in motion. Following a serious editorial error in a report about Donald Trump, the British BBC is being attacked by politicians and publicists on both sides of the Atlantic. The corporation apologizes for the error – editing the speech to suggest that in 2021 Trump directly called for violence at the Capitol. Its CEO and head of information resigned. For critics of the BBC, however, this is not enough: Trump threatens a lawsuit, accusations of left-wing bias return, and in Great Britain some commentators speak of the final collapse of the institution-symbol of journalistic integrity – and the country itself. Another mainstay of Britishness, the monarchy, is also fighting for trust. A few days ago, Charles III stripped his brother Andrew of his title and princely privileges. This is related to his long-standing friendship with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and accusations against the now former prince himself. However, the king's decision does not close the matter, questions remain as to why the scandal was reacted to so late. What do these two crises say about modern Great Britain? Colm Tóibín – one of the most outstanding and beloved contemporary Irish writers – will talk in this episode of Report on Books about how his novels are created. Sometimes it resembles the work of a composer who has to reduce symphonic music to the chamber sound of strings. An idea or vision may surprise the writer in the middle of the street, but then a laborious process awaits him of making decisions about the sound and meaning of each subsequent sentence. Colm Tóibín will also talk about when an author feels the need to revisit the heroine of his book. In the novel "Brooklyn," Eilis Lacey left her hometown in Ireland for America in her early twenties. In the next one, titled "Long Island," the heroine, 25 years older, returns home. "Brooklyn" and "Long Island" are poignant novels about the experience of Irish and Italian immigrants settling in New York in the second half of the 20th century, about searching for identity, cutting off roots, loneliness, and eternal drifting.
