Lula and Trump: the connection, the meeting, and the Peace Council

    From 🇧🇷 O Assunto, published at 2026-01-27 03:16

Guest: Guga Chacra, commentator for TV Globo and GloboNews, and columnist for O Globo newspaper. 50 minutes. This was the duration of the conversation between presidents Lula and Donald Trump this Monday (26). The long phone call is another sign of rapprochement between the governments of Brazil and the United States – and helps explain the current status of the relationship between the countries. During the conversation, the two presidents agreed on a visit by Lula to Washington later this year, but without a confirmed date. The “Peace Council” created by Trump was also a topic of the call – Brazil was invited to join the group. Lula has not yet responded to the invitation, but conditioned Brazilian participation on changes to the group's format, focusing on solutions for the Gaza Strip and the inclusion of Palestine in the debates. In this episode, Natuza Nery talks with Guga Chacra to explain the current state of the relationship between Lula and Trump (and between Brazil and the USA). A commentator for Globo and GloboNews and a columnist for O Globo newspaper, Guga points out the risks and opportunities opening up for Brazil with Lula's in-person visit to the US capital. He also analyzes the “non-response” given by the Brazilian president to the American invitation to join Trump's Peace Council.

    The NFL (2026 Update)

    From 🇺🇸 Acquired, published at 2026-01-27 02:50

The NFL is nearly synonymous with America today. Practically nothing is more quintessentially and universally American than tuning in every Sunday (and Monday, and Thursday… and sometimes Saturdays and holidays too) to watch the world’s most beautiful ballet of violence. It generates the most revenue of any sports league globally and sets new records for team valuations each year. But it wasn’t always this way.The history of the NFL mirrors America’s own development: scrappy small-town teams rode the successive growth waves of the automobile, TV, the Internet and social media to grow larger than the even the founders’ wildest dreams. Whether you watch football or not, the NFL is one incredible business story, and one that we’ve taken more lessons from over the years for Acquired itself than perhaps any other episode we’ve made.Note: This is a remastered release of our original January 2023 episode, updated to today's Acquired production standards. It also features a full hour+ followup section at the end covering the seismic shifts in the NFL’s business since the original episode’s release. Much has happened in those three years: Taylor Swift entered the league (via merger 🙂), streaming went mainstream (and took over Thanksgiving and Christmas), sports gambling exploded from 46 million to 76 million bettors, and — in perhaps the most surprising development — private equity finally stormed the gates of the NFL. Oh, and average franchise valuations grew by 60% from $4.5 billion to over $7 billion. US Under Secretary of War arrives in Ecuador amidst commercial conflict with Colombia

    From 🇦🇷 Cara o Ceca, published at 2026-01-26 17:14

Joseph Humire meets with the Ecuadorian Government as part of the joint regional security strategy, to discuss the border situation with Colombia. Previously, Daniel Noboa imposed tariffs on his neighbor, alluding to the proliferation of drug trafficking groups in the border area. "Noboa flatters Trump at the expense of regional alliances; the influence of the US in that country is evident. In this sense, he always targets Petro, he is very critical. At this moment, Ecuador is taking advantage of the easing of its energy crisis to carry out this confrontation," commented Colombian journalist Diego Aretz on Cara o Ceca. "The second in command of Defense [of the US] is in Ecuador talking about border operations, in a context of threat to the region. The US said it does not rule out a ground incursion in South America. This topic will be on the table in Petro's meeting with Trump," he added. 29 years after the murder of the journalist who portrayed Argentine power José Luis Cabezas was burned to death in the summer of 1997 for having photographed Alberto Yabrán a year earlier, an businessman linked to the then Argentine president, Carlos Menem. "Yabrán was the power behind the power. He did business against the State, associated with the Government itself. He wanted to remain anonymous, as it helped him continue with those businesses. José Luis gave a face to that enigmatic character," affirmed Gabriel Michi, journalist and colleague of Cabezas. He is the author of the book Cabezas. A Journalist. A Crime. A Country.

Book Report – Jerzy Koch on a new translation of "Buddenbrooks" by Thomas Mann

From 🇵🇱 Raport o stanie świata Dariusza Rosiaka, published at 2026-01-26 16:00

Jerzy Koch's new translation of Thomas Mann's debut novel "Buddenbrooks" is undoubtedly one of the most important literary events of the turn of 2025 and 2026.Why does a novel written 125 years ago still move us so deeply? And how is it possible that this great work was written by a 20-year-old who had previously repeated a class three times and left school before passing his matura exams?"Buddenbrooks" is a story about the decline of a multi-generational merchant family, spanning the entire 19th century. With unparalleled mastery and sweep, Thomas Mann portrays the ceremonial of bourgeois life, including the minutest details concerning, for example, the color and texture of the fabric covering the furniture in wealthy merchant homes, the characters' wardrobes, or the complex dishes making up their refined menu. This richly adorned world is based on a merchant ethos that blurs the lines between business and family from generation to generation. But in this great family saga, perhaps most important is the portrait of man as a being composed of cracks and paradoxes. For can the artistic spirit be reconciled with bourgeois morality? This is a question that also relates to the biography of "Buddenbrooks" author Thomas Mann.Host: Agata KasprolewiczGuest: Jerzy Koch---------------------------------------------Report on the State of the World is a broadcast that exists thanks to our Patrons, join the fundraiser ➡️ https://patronite.pl/DariuszRosiakSubscribe to the Report on the State of the World newsletter ➡️ https://dariuszrosiak.substack.comReport T-shirts and mugs ➡️ https://patronite-sklep.pl/kolekcja/raport-o-stanie-swiata/ [Self-promotion]

    258. When Power Talks, People Walk: Why Leaders Don’t Hear What Matters Most

From 🇺🇸 Think Fast Talk Smart: Communication Techniques, published at 2026-01-26 14:00

Why it’s critical to say what needs to be said — and listen when others do the same.Speak out, listen up — these are Megan Reitz’s core pillars of workplace communication. According to her, healthy organizations are only possible when everyone can say what they think, and they know they’ll be heard.Reitz is an academic and author whose work focuses on creating workplaces where all voices are heard and valued. Her latest book, Speak Out, Listen Up, explores the power dynamics that shape our communication at work and beyond. “Conversational habits define organizational success and our capacity to flourish,” she says. “Ethical conduct depends on what we're able to say and what we aren't, and whether we're heard or not. Innovation depends on our capacity to speak up, challenge, and disrupt, and whether that is heard or not. And of course, our engagement and our ability to perform depends on a feeling that our opinion is valued and that we're respected.”In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Reitz and host Matt Abrahams discuss how to create workplaces where every voice is heard. From her T.R.U.T.H. framework (trust, risk, understanding, titles, and how-to) to the pitfalls of communicational power dynamics, Reitz’s insights reveal why healthy organizations are only possible when we all speak out and listen up.Episode Reference Links:Megan ReitzMegan’s Book: Speak Out, Listen UpEp.132 Lean Into Failure: How to Make Mistakes That WorkEp.148 Conviction and Compassion: How to Have Hard Conversations Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> [email protected] Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (02:17) - The TRUTH Framework (05:28) - Status, Titles, and Voice (09:17) - Power Traps For Leaders (14:02) - Mindful Leadership = Habit Change (18:31) - The Final Three Questions (25:43) - Conclusion  ********Thank you to our sponsors.  These partnerships support the ongoing production of the podcast, allowing us to bring it to you at no cost. This episode is brought to you by Babbel.
