In major cities of Syria, celebrations were held related to the anniversary of the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's regime. On December 8 last year, after an 11-day offensive, forces of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham organization led by Ahmed al-Shara captured Damascus, announcing the end of the Assad family's bloody 54-year rule. Their culmination was a 13-year civil war. As a result, over 600,000 people died, and nearly seven million – one third of the population – fled the country.Over the past year, Ahmed al-Shara has brought Syria out of international isolation, significantly weakened Iran's influence, and established contact with the West, from where funds have begun to flow for the reconstruction of the devastated state. However, Syria is still shaken by ethnic violence. In March, government forces carried out attacks on coastal provinces inhabited by Alawites – members of a religious group that previously supported Assad; in July, acts of violence also occurred against Druze living in As-Suwayda province.
