Original air date: Sept 18, 2019: Journalist, podcaster and New York Times best-selling author Malcolm Gladwell discusses his book, Talking to Strangers: What We Should Know About the People We Don’t Know. Malcolm examines his theory that prejudging people we don’t know can lead to dangerous consequences. Through well-known cases like the Bernie Madoff scandal, the Amanda Knox trial, the Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse trial, and the racially charged arrest and death of Sandra Bland, Malcolm explains his belief that many of us unconsciously invite conflict and misunderstanding into our own lives.

Looking at business news and stock market coverage over the past decade (including a few HBR articles), you'd think that just about every traditional, old-economy company has fallen prey -- or will soon -- to tech-focused competitors. But London Business School's Julian Birkinshaw says that story of disruption and destruction is overblown. His research into Fortune 500 and Global 500 organizations shows that, despite the rise of a few tech giants like Amazon and Google, many industries haven't been radically remade and that many older incumbents are still standing strong. He outlines the strategies they've used to do so, from fighting back to reinvention. Birkinshaw is the author of the HBR article “How Incumbents Survive and Thrive.”

Short-sightedness may be the greatest threat to humanity, says conceptual artist Katie Paterson, whose work engages with deep time -- a concept that describes the history of the Earth over a time span of millions of years. In this lively talk, she takes us through her art -- a telephone line connected to a melting glacier, maps of dying stars – and presents her latest project: the Future Library, a forested room holding unread manuscripts from famous authors, not to be published or read until the year 2114.Learn more about our flagship conference happening this April at attend.ted.com/podcast Hosted on Acast.
