Xia Chaochuan was arrested twice during the White Paper Movement. During the 2023 Shanghai Halloween, photos of TA walking on the street covered in white paper were widely circulated by the media. In mid-March, Yuan Li met Xia Chaochuan during an offline meetup in the Netherlands. TA left China for the Netherlands in early 2024 and has since been deeply involved in and observing the overseas civil society ecosystem of China. In this episode, Xia Chaochuan talks about their growing up experiences, how TA gradually understood the complexity of the Chinese reality in different stages and different predicaments, as well as the risks and limitations faced by activists. How does TA view the connection between trauma and action, and how does TA choose to come forward with their real name when fear has never really dissipated? In the Netherlands, TA was embraced by a friendly community atmosphere and continues to question "what to do next."
