Hamas released all living hostages held since the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel and returned the bodies of eight who did not survive captivity. Israel claims one returned body is not a hostage. On Monday, Israel released nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, including 250 serving long sentences for murder and terrorism. These actions implement the first phase of Donald Trump's Gaza peace plan, accepted by Hamas and Israel. On Monday, the American president spoke in the Knesset, announcing a new beginning for the Middle East, and then attended a summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, where a declaration on lasting peace and prosperity was signed. In Gaza, Hamas patrols returned to the streets, and the Israeli army withdrew to the initial, so-called yellow line established during negotiations. Since Monday, Israeli soldiers have killed several Palestinians who, the IDF claims, were armed and trying to cross the yellow line. Masked men, likely Hamas members, carried out at least one public execution of people accused of collaborating with Israel. Clashes also occurred between Hamas and clan militias, supported by Israel during the war. Has the war in Gaza really ended? How are further negotiations progressing, and what are they about? In this episode of Book Report, I invite you to meet Yael van der Wouden, a Dutch-Israeli writer whose debut novel "In Good Hands" went straight to the Booker Prize shortlist and was also honored with this year's Women's Prize for Fiction. "In Good Hands" is the story of a woman named Isabel who is obsessed with the house. Her days are filled with polishing silver, counting porcelain cups, washing and ironing tablecloths and curtains. After her mother's death, she lives in it alone and knows that the house does not and never will belong to her. By her uncle's decision, one of her brothers will inherit it - but only when he starts a family. However, a stranger appears in the house and disrupts Isabel's world order. All this takes place in the Dutch countryside, in the early 1960s, a dozen years after the end of World War II. "In Good Hands" is a novel about the burden of complicity, which - as Yael van der Wouden says - weighs on us all. It is a story about the power of love and desire, in which lies the ultimate hope. Gaza ceasefire implementation begins between Israel and Hamas. Per the agreement, accepted Thursday evening by Benjamin Netanyahu's government, a ceasefire was to take effect within 24 hours, followed by Hamas releasing Israeli hostages by Monday at the latest. The Israeli army began withdrawing to agreed positions, giving it control of just over half of the Gaza Strip. The humanitarian blockade has been formally lifted – trucks with aid can enter the devastated and famine-stricken territory. Many commentators speak of the end of the war, although not all details of the agreement are clear, and the next phase of negotiations will be much more difficult. However, for now, Donald Trump's plan is working – and civilian life has become a little safer. Is this really the end of the war? What can we expect in the Gaza Strip in the coming days? What next for Hamas, but also for the political future of Prime Minister Netanyahu? And what will the two sides still be negotiating? Negotiations on ending the war in the Gaza Strip have been taking place in Sharm el-Sheikh since Monday. So far, more is known about the discrepancies between Israel and Hamas than about their progress. It is unclear whether the disarmament of this organization means handing over all the weapons its members have. It is not known what mandate international stabilization forces would receive, or when Israeli hostages will return home. Yesterday, Israelis commemorated the approximately 1,200 people who died on October 7, 2023, during the Hamas attack. Private ceremonies were held in the kibbutzim that were attacked, and at the Nova festival site at 6:29 a.m. – when the attack began – a minute of silence was observed in memory of the dead. Siergiej Lebiediew is one of the most important voices in contemporary Russian literature – a writer and historian who seeks the genesis of the evil that infected first the Soviet Union and now contemporary, Putin's Russia in his novels. This is the most serious attack on Danish critical infrastructure to date, says Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen after three large drones forced the closure of Copenhagen Airport for several hours. A similar incident occurred in Oslo. Earlier, a hacking attack on the passenger check-in system disrupted operations at other airports in Western Europe. So far, no evidence has been presented that Russia is behind the incidents, but the Danish Prime Minister links them to the violation of Estonian airspace by Russian fighters on September 19 and previous provocations by the Kremlin over Poland and Romania. The Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth fascinates and outrages. Sienkiewicz used this unique moment in our history as a canvas for a story bringing consolation to the hearts of compatriots living under partitions. In the ongoing discussion, it is a point of reference for settling accounts with a system based on exploitation, and even a source of contemporary Polish sins and weaknesses. In this episode of Report on Books, I invite you to a conversation with Paweł Rzewuski, the author of the excellent novel "Krzywda" (Injustice), which outlines a rich, complex, diverse, full of paradoxes and extraordinary phenomena picture of the First Republic in the first half of the 17th century. Written in the form of a nobleman's tale, a frame story about the fate of nobleman Stanisław Wróblewski of the Krzywda coat of arms, in the same space-time it places dietines, rebellions, noblemen, peasants, as well as apparitions, werewolves and devils.
